Diverticulitis symptoms: Gastroenterology

Image

Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of your digestive system. They are found most often in the lower part of the large intestine (colon). Diverticula are common, especially after age 40, and seldom cause problems. Sometimes, however, one or more of the pouches become inflamed or infected. That condition is known as diverticulitis (die-vur-tik-yoo-LIE-tis).

The most serious type of diverticular disease is diverticulitis. The pouches on your intestines get inflamed or infected when they tear or become blocked by poop. It can cause uncomfortable symptoms and, in some cases, serious complications. If left untreated, these complications can cause long-term health problems.

Diverticulitis can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea and a marked change in your bowel habits. Mild diverticulitis can be treated with rest, changes in your diet and antibiotics. Severe or recurring diverticulitis may require surgery.

Potential symptoms of diverticular disease include:

  • Pain in your abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

If you develop diverticulitis, you might experience:

  • Constant or severe pain in your abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and chills
  • Blood in your stool
  • Bleeding from your rectum

Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of diverticulitis. It will mostly likely occur in the lower left side of your abdomen. But it can also develop in the right side of your abdomen. If you develop any of the above symptoms, such as vomiting or blood in your stool, it may be a sign of a serious complication from diverticulitis or another condition.

Other risk factors include:

  • Being overweight
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Not getting enough exercise
  • Eating lots of fat and red meat but not much fiber
  • Taking certain kinds of drugs, including steroids, opioids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or naproxen
