Lung Cancer- Number One Cause of Cancer Deaths

Image

Cancer of the lung, like all cancers, results from an abnormality in the body's basic unit of life, the cell. The lung is a very common site for metastasis from malignant tumors in other parts of the body. Lung cancers can arise in any part of the lung, but 90%-95% of cancers of the lung arise from the epithelial cells, the cells lining the larger and smaller airways (bronchi and bronchioles); for this reason, lung cancers are sometimes called bronchogenic cancers or bronchogenic carcinomas. (Carcinoma is another term for cancer.) Cancers also can arise from the pleura (called mesotheliomas) or rarely from supporting tissues within the lungs, for example, the blood vessels.

Risk factors for lung cancer

  • The incidence of lung cancer is strongly correlated with cigarette smoking, with about 90% of lung cancers arising because of tobacco use. Pipe and cigar smoking also can cause lung cancer, although the risk is not as high as with cigarette smoking.
  • Exposure to asbestos fibers
  • Exposure to radon gas
  • Exposure to radon gas Air pollution
  • Exposure to diesel exhaust

Lung Cancer Symptoms

  • Cough (chronic, recurrent)
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Coughing up phlegm that contains blood
  • Chest pain

Treatment

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy

Journal of Oncology Translational Research is an International journal devoted to fostering research investigations which bridge the laboratory and clinical settings. It covers all aspects of research on cancer, from the more basic discoveries dealing with both cell and molecular biology of tumour cells, to the most advanced clinical assays of conventional and new drugs including risk assessment, cellular and molecular characterization, prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of human cancers with the overall goal of improving the clinical care of oncology patients. Journal of Oncology Translational research focuses on all the fields of research related to cancer, its diagnostic techniques and also its treatment and prevention.

The Journal of Oncology Translational Research publishes the scholarly articles on open access forum, after a thorough peer review. It publishes all relevant topics in the area of cancer. Manuscripts can be forwarded to the Editorial Office at oncologytransres@medicalresjournals.com
